Matraville is a suburb in Sydney, New South Wales. It is located 9 kilometres south-east of the Sydney central business district. The suburb’s name was given in honour of an American sailor and diplomat, James Matra. He was a midshipman on the voyage by Captain James Cook to Botany Bay in 1770.
In the 1840s, the marshes, swamps and sandhills in the area were replaced by market gardens. It then became a hub for Chinese gardeners in the 1860’s. After the First World War, it was planned to be turned into a model garden village for returned soldiers. However, the plan was not successful and only one of the homes from the development remained.
