Lakemba is a residential suburb in Sydney, New South Wales. It is located 15 kilometres south-west of the central business district of Sydney. The suburb was first known as “Potato Hill” because of the potatoes that were cropped there. However, Benjamin Taylor changed its name in the 1880s to “Lakemba”. The name was derived after Lakeba Island in the Lau Islands group of Fiji, which was his in-law’s mission station from 1835. Click here for more information about the city of Lakemba NSW
